1 (2)

Does my child need to be a strong swimmer?

No. We operate in safe, waist- to chest-depth water, and our instructors are always close by to provide guidance and support. All lessons begin with an ocean safety briefing, and every child surfs under direct supervision at all times.

What if the weather is bad?

We run in almost all conditions, and some of our most fun sessions happen in light rain. If surf conditions are unsafe or the ocean is completely flat, we will reschedule or run a land-based surf theory or movement session. Safety always comes first.

Can my surfer bring their own gear?

Absolutely. Your child is welcome to bring their own board or wetsuit, and our instructors will check that it’s suitable for the day’s surf conditions. We also supply all boards, wetsuits, and rash tops for every participant.

What about supervision and safety?

Safety is our top priority. We operate with a target ratio of one instructor to every six surfers. All staff are ISA qualified, first aid certified, and surf rescue awarded. Lessons are held in safe areas with constant supervision and clear boundaries.

What if my child has learning or behavioural challenges?

We specialise in supporting neurodiverse children and those needing extra care. Our team is experienced in adapting lessons for a wide range of learning styles and abilities. For physical limitations or specific needs, please contact us in advance so we can ensure the best support.

What age group is the After-School Surfing Program for?

The program is open to children aged 6  to 16 years old. Kids are grouped by age and ability so everyone can learn at their own pace while building confidence and having fun with friends.

Where are After-School Surfing sessions held?

Sessions run at Orewa Beach and Mangawhai Beach, depending on your location. Both beaches offer safe, consistent conditions that are ideal for learning to surf. Each week we email you with updates about the week’s conditions and plans.

What should my child bring?

Please bring swimwear for under the wetsuit, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle. All surf gear is provided. We recommend arriving 10 minutes early so your surfer is ready to go when the lesson starts.

How does the program work?

The After-School Surfing Program runs once a week during school terms. Each session builds on the last, helping kids develop skills through our Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum progression system. It’s all about learning, confidence, and fun in a safe, structured way.

How do I book or learn more?

You can book the After-School Surfing Program directly on our website under Kids > After-School Surfing Program, or contact us at surf@aotearoasurf.co.nz or +64 9 431 5760. Programs often fill quickly, so we recommend booking early to secure your preferred day and location.
